Travel Itinerary

  • Day 1 – Departure from Greenville, South Carolina to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Travel.
  • Day 2 – Travel (Takes about 42 hours of travel from Greenville to Dar es Salaam)
  • Day 3 – Arrive in Dar es Salaam, taxi from airport to hotel and stay at Safari Inn in downtown Dar es Salaam.
  • Day 4 – Depart hotel in taxi to airport. Dar es Salaam and fly to Stone Town, Zanzibar Island. Taxi from airport to hotel. Arrival and acclimatization. Thorough briefing about the course will be held. Stay at Kiponda Hotel in Stone Town.
  • Day 5 – We will conduct a short tour of different parts of the city. Seminar at the Institute of Marine Sciences (AM) and Seminar with Women’s Development Society (PM) along with traditional Swahili Spice Dinner. Stay at Kiponda Hotel.
  • Day 6 – Spice Tour that includes a focus on traditional small-scale horticulture and animal husbandry. Stay at Kiponda Hotel.
  • Day 7 – Travel from Stone Town to Jozani National Park with guest lecture on Ethnobotany (study or culture and plants, including medicinal use of plants); also see the Red Columbus Monkeys (endemic species to Zanzibar Island) (All Day). This will serve the basis for an ethnographic book created by students with park warden. Stay at Panga Chumvi hotel in Matemwe Beach.
  • Day 8 – Seminar on Marine Conservation/Protected Areas in Zanzibar. Guest lecture on marine biology and conservation management. Snorkeling in Mnemba Island/Matemwe Beach experiencing shallow water biodiversity (AM or PM depending on tide schedule) and beach day. Stay at Panga Chumvi hotel in Matemwe Beach.
  • Day 9 – Attend a seminar and visitation to local Women’s Economic Development Project sites including Seaweed Farms and Pearl Farms (PM) with a guest lecture. Stay at Panga Chumvi hotel in Matemwe Beach.
  • Day 10 – Travel by taxi from hotel back to Stone Town (AM). Flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport and short car ride to Arusha (PM). Stay at Klub Afriko Hotel.
  • Day 11 – TNRF Headquarters and Arusha Town Tour. Guest lecture on forest resource management in Tanzania. Stay at Klub Afriko Hotel.
  • Day 12 - Travel to Mt. Meru (one hour drive from Arusha). Educational Hike and Guest Seminar with a Forester working in Mt. Meru. Camp in protected tents and campsite in a village on Mt. Meru.
  • Day 13 - Understanding and promoting livelihood security on Mt. Meru (local project or hike on Meru). Camp in protected tents and campsite in a village on Mt. Meru.
  • Day 14 - Understanding and promoting livelihood security on Mt. Meru (hike on Meru or local project with villagers). Travel back to Arusha and stay at Klub Afriko Hotel.
  • Day 15 - Safari excursion to Serengeti National Park, Lake Manyara, and Ngorongoro Conservation Area begins.  Visit to Maasai pastoralist village to observe and discuss interactions between pastoralism and wildlife conservation in relation to social, ecological and climate processes of change. Also visit Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute and Tanzania National Parks Headquarters. Klub Afriko Tour Operator. Stay in protected/secure campsites (2-3 people per tent).
  • Day 16 - Safari excursion to Serengeti National Park, Lake Manyara, and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Klub Afriko Tour Operator. Stay in protected/secure (2-3 people per tent).
  • Day 17 – Safari excursion to Serengeti National Park, Lake Manyara, and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Klub Afriko Tour Operator. Stay in protected/secure campsites (2-3 people per tent).
  • Day 18 – Safari excursion to Serengeti National Park, Lake Manyara, and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Klub Afriko Tour Operator. Stay in protected/secure campsites (2-3 people per tent).
  • Day 19 – Safari excursion to Serengeti National Park, Lake Manyara, and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Klub Afriko Tour Operator. Stay in protected/secure campsites (2-3 people per tent). Travel back to Arusha and stay at Klub Afriko Hotel.
  • Day 20 – Return flight from Mt. Kilimanjaro International Airport to Charlotte, NC to drive to Greenville, South Carolina
  • Day 21 - Arrive in Greenville, South Carolina
